According to stats on lohud.com, reporters will be looking back at and following up on stories and subjects that were the most popular among our readers throughout 2017.
The year 2017 was another eventful one for Rockland's most famous adolescent.
Grace VanderWaal, a thirteen-year-old singer, is taking a break for the holidays after a hectic year of recording, touring, and earning her first Teen Choice Award.
"Just The Beginning," her first full-length record, was released in November, but this Suffern adolescent has been on a roller coaster journey for quite some time.
With her participation on "America's Got Talent" in June 2016, the ukulele player and singer first captivated audiences. She went on to win the reality competition show's main prize of $1 million, as well as a recording contract and comparisons to singer Taylor Swift.
After a bit of a squabble, she finally received her tree home this spring.
Before construction could begin, the VanderWaals had to go before the Village of Wesley Hills in May. They acquired their licenses, and the finished building, which was made possible by Animal Planet's Treehouse Masters, consists of two different tree houses that span five backyard trees.
Her first EP, "Perfectly Imperfect," was well received by fans and reached the top ten on iTunes. Old and new admirers alike were drawn to songs like "Sick of Being Told" and her debut, "I Don't Know My Name."
VanderWaal was named "Choice Next Big Thing" at the Teen Choice Awards in August. She's also been honored by Billboard's Women in Music with the "Rising Star Award."
She performed at benefit events throughout the year and became the youngest musician to have a Fender trademark model for her ukuleles. She's also preparing to embark on an 11-city tour, which will kick up in February.
Reporters spoke with VanderWaal this week to learn more about what fans may look forward to in the coming year.
It's been an eventful year. Do you have any favorite moments? Being in the studio and making friends, as well as composing and touring, have been some of my fondest experiences. My highlights have probably been the tour and getting to meet and play for all of my fans.
What is your current schedule now that your record has been released? So occupied! Charming Charlie's hosts promotions, meet-ups with fans, and album signings (a jewelry and accessories chain). It's quite a lot! Especially when it comes to the tour.
Do you still get to see your friends? Not really, but when I'm not working or in school, I give it my all.
Is there anything you'd like fans to know? I'm working with the Little Miracles Foundation, which I founded to help schools without music programs. Little Miracles, a show choir, is the name of the group. I started the first one in the East Ramapo School District. I've given away some scholarships, and with my Fender association, we've also donated ukuleles, but it's usually the show choir. I adore the show choir! I'll be seeing their first performance very shortly.
