Grace didn't look like an underdog competitor this time, performing her new single Moonlight, but rather a "star," as Howie Mandel, the judge who gave her the Golden Buzzer, phrased it backstage. Grace, now 13, didn't feel that way when she took the stage.
"Frankie, I'm a nervous wreck!" While getting mic'd up and bringing her puppy's head near to hers, she talked to her puppy (a pug whose full name is Frankenstein). You know how it feels when you smell something you've never smelled before? And it's the weird sensation in your stomach as you try to remember what smell it was?" She said it at the Hollywood Theatre. Grace felt suffocating cloud of anxiety which filling her lungs. That is how she feels.
Grace VanderWaal won Season 11 of America's Got Talent on Wednesday night, a year after winning the competition.
"It's gotten scary," she admitted, especially now that she believes she has to prove she is deserving of the ultimate prize.
Grace's performance, despite the fact that she crooned and danced with her ukulele and bright red heels, went off without a hitch. Simon Cowell, Mel B, Heidi Klum, and Mandel all gave her a standing ovation, and a YouTube video of her performance had over 200,000 views in only a few hours.
But that doesn't mean Grace felt self-assured immediately following her performance.
She told USA TODAY in the backstage that, she just praying to God everything went good on TV.
